S Jaishankar speaks at Public Manch with Times Group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in an exclusive interview with Times Group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar, stated that Pakistan must address terrorism on its soil before India can reconsider its stance towards its neighbour. His remarks came in response to a question from a viewer who asked him about a recent statement he had made that the "ball is in Pakistan's court" when it comes to normalisation of ties with India.
Speaking at Public Manch with Navika Kumar, Jaishankar replied: "No, the ball is not in Pakistan's court. Terrorists are. First, they should sort out their terrorists."
Jaishankar, speaking at a CII event in New Delhi last week, had emphasised that Pakistan must "wind down its terrorism industry" to be treated as a normal neighbour. He added that India will "wait and see" the direction the new government in Pakistan takes regarding ties with New Delhi.
"Now the ball is in their court. If they wind down the industry (terrorism) which they have built up over many, many decades, then people will treat them like a normal neighbour. If they make this their core competence, then obviously that will define their image," Jaishankar had said, adding, "We've been very clear that they have to make up their mind; and part of the problem is also that after 2019, the then Imran Khan government took several steps to downgrade the relationship. We didn't do it, they did."
Addressing the audience at Public Manch, he added, "Who among you wants us to tolerate terrorism like we did after the 26/11 attacks? Do you want us to sit back and not respond, saying Pakistan is our neighbour and we should engage in dialogue? Is there anyone?"
This interaction with Dr. S. Jaishankar occurred just two weeks before the Lok Sabha results. In the interview, he also discussed his greatest diplomatic challenge, detailing how India managed to bring the West and Russia together at the G-20 summit in Delhi. He also revealed how Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened twice to help rescue stranded Indian nationals in Ukraine during the war with Russia.
"If you ask me about stopping the war, then my answer would be yes. I am a witness of the same. I can give you the date. I can give you time. I can give you how long. I can tell you how. And I can tell you for whom," S Jaishankar said.
He revealed further, "This has been done twice. Firstly, it was done on March 5 in Kharkiv. Our students were on their way to the nearest safe zone. Heavy shelling was taking place. Our Prime Minister called President Putin and asked him to stop the shelling to make way for our students. Upon the Prime Minister's request, the Russian Army stopped the shelling and our teachers could reach the safe zone."
Additionally, he also touched upon the decline of Western supremacy and criticised the Western media for supporting elements in India that undermine the country's achievements.
