New Delhi: Pema Khandu took oath as the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third time in a row today. The BJP leader's oath-taking ceremony in Itanagar was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, among others.
Eleven other MLAs, including Deputy CM Chowna Mein were also sworn in as ministers at the function held in the Dorjee Khandu State Convention Centre.
Dasanglu Pul is the lone woman minister in the new cabinet, which has eight fresh faces.
The portfolios would be allocated later in the day, following which the first cabinet meeting of the new government would be held, officials said.
Pema Khandu led the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh to secure a landslide victory in the assembly polls, winning 46 seats in the 60-member assembly. National People's Party won five seats and the Nationalist Congress Party won three seats. Two seats were won by the People's Party of Arunachal, and one by Congress. Three Independent have also won their seat in the recently concluded assembly polls.
A prominent leader for the BJP in the northeastern state, Khandu is recognized for his strategic acumen which helped the BJP come to power for the first time in the northeastern state bordering China in 2016.
Khandu joined politics in 2016 after the untimely demise of his father, former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, in a helicopter crash in 2011. He was elected unopposed from his father's constituency Mukto.
Khandu's leadership trajectory soared following a constitutional crisis in January 2016 that led to the imposition of president's rule.
Upon the lifting of central rule, he became a minister in the Kalikho Pul-led government, supported by the BJP. The government, however, fell within a short time. Khandu subsequently became the Chief Minister in July 2016 at the age of 37.
In 2019, he was re-elected from the Mukto assembly seat and assumed office as Chief Minister without political challenge.
Beyond politics, Khandu is known for promoting culture and sports in the state. An avid music enthusiast, he enthrals audiences with renditions of classics by Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi at official gatherings.
Khandu also actively organizes cricket tournaments and supports local athletes, nurturing talent across various disciplines including football, cricket, badminton, and volleyball.
A history graduate from Delhi's Hindu College, Khandu belongs to the Monpa tribe, primarily inhabiting Tawang and parts of West Kameng.
During the assembly polls held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections on April 19, Khandu campaigned on a platform of corruption-free governance, emphasizing transparency and people-centric policies.
A Buddhist by faith, the 45-year-old Khandu has been re-elected unopposed from the Mukto seat in the border district of Tawang.
