New Delhi: The Russian Embassy in Delhi addressed concerns on Wednesday regarding the recruitment of Indians into the Russian Army. Roman Babushkin, the Chargé d'Affaires, said that Russia aligns with the Indian government's stance on the matter. Babushkin acknowledged the presence of more than 100 Indian recruits in the Russian Army but clarified that they are not engaged in any activities within conflict zones.
“We do not want them, and we are investigating the agents who recruited and deceived them. Agents from Russia are also under investigation. All Indian nationals in Russia are there on visitor or business visas, and we have no mechanism for recruiting Indian or other foreign nationals into our army,” said.
The Chargé d'Affaires further said that a special investigation is on against agents who fraudulently recruited Indians by promising them money.
"We are investigating the agents who are cheating Indians into war zone. Some have gone voluntarily to earn money. But some are cheated into the war zones," he added.
The response comes after sources close to the matter claimed that Russia has agreed to discharge and facilitate the return of all Indians working in its Army.
As per sources, the matter was raised by PM Modi in a private meeting with President Putin at his residence. After PM Modi raised his concerns over the issue, Russia has agreed to discharge and facilitate the return of Indians serving in its Army, sources said.
The issue has long been seen as a crucial one as nearly two dozen Indians were allegedly recruited in the Russian Army to fight in the ongoing Ukraine war. These men were reportedly duped agents by promising a high-paying job in Russia.
Earlier this year, a widely circulated video depicted men from Punjab and Haryana donning army uniforms, claiming they had been misled into participating in the Ukraine conflict. They made a plea to the Indian government for assistance.
In March, the government swiftly responded by strongly raising the issue with Russian authorities to expedite their release. They also announced stringent actions against agents and individuals responsible for deceitfully recruiting these men under false pretences.
