Howrah: Kulgachia locals chased down a BSF (Border Security Force) jawan and handed him over to the cops after he allegedly molested a woman when she was out for a morning walk on Monday. The incident took place on Sunday, a day before Uluberia was about to go to the polls. Trinamool Congress has now moved the Election Commission of India regarding this issue, urging the poll body to ensure women's safety during the polls.
The cops have sent a notice to the chief of the BSF's unit and asked him to join the investigation after the woman filed a complaint against the BSF jawan.
The information has also been sent to the EC by the police. “All legal formalities have been completed after informing the EC. We have started a probe,” the Howrah Rural Police Superintendent Swati Bhangalia said, according to a report by TOI.
The woman stated in her complaint that she was out for her morning walk at around 6 am. The village road was deserted when two jawans in uniforms approached her and gave her an indecent proposal. They also made objectionable gestures at her. When she protested, one of the jawans allegedly hugged and kissed her. Somehow the woman alarmed the other villagers and they rushed to the spot, catching the one who touched her. The other jawan managed to escape, the TO report added.
"A case has been registered under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 354 (outraging a woman's modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation)," an officer was quoted as saying by the report.
A senior BSF officer said that the accused has been removed from his position and necessary investigation was going on.
State woman and child development minister Sashi Panja meanwhile said, “This is unacceptable. The central force jawans had the audacity to physically abuse a woman in broad daylight. We demand the strongest possible action. This is part of a calculated attempt to defame Bengal and terrorise women. If anyone - even those in uniform - think they can get away after such heinous acts, no they cannot.”
