Kolkata: The construction work for building the underground portion of the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor has begun. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has started the construction, and will use the cut-and-cover method to build twin tunnels. While the work at the new portion has kickstarted, infrastructural development continues at the Orange Line or Line 6. It is mostly elevated, and also ducks below the ground as it enters the airport’s Jai Hind metro station.
Speaking on the on-going construction work, a Railways engineer on behalf of the RVNL said, “The base slab casting work will build around 500m of twin tunnels through the traditional cut-and-cover method”. He explained that a cut-and-cover tunnel is first trenched or excavated, then it is covered with an overhead concrete support, quoted by a media report.
It is a low-cost method against expensive and hi-tech tunnelling that takes help of giant tunnel boring machines (TBMs) used in the East-West Metro construction. This method is used to build short and shallow tunnels.
However, building the underground ramp and tunnel is still a challenge. Owing to which, the last 125m stretch of the tunnelling will be carried out using the box-pushing method. It should be noted that over this stretch runs the approach road to the airport. Hence, blocking this road for construction purposes would mean stopping flights’ passengers from reaching the airport, reported Times of India.
“The technique of box-pushing is used to make underpasses or subways below the road where traffic cannot be interrupted and open-cut systems are not possible,” said the engineer.
It should be noted that the operations at the Airport-Haldiram section of the New Garia-Airport Orange line are likely to begin by the end of this year. By the time the stretch at the Kolkata Airport will be ready, it will be serving as an interchange for the commuters.
