Gauri Khan's Restaurant Torii: Japanese Cuisine Gets A Fresh Spin At Gauri Khan's Revamped Dining Destination In Bandra

Since its relaunch, Torii is been hailed as a culinary hotspot, guided by interior expert turned restauranteur, Gauri Khan. Chef Stefan Gadit's menu marries fresh local ingredients with a global vision for a delightful experience, guided by the flavours of east Asia.
Torii

Torii, Bandra's latest Pan-Asian hotspot

On a quiet Bandra corner, Japanese cuisine is taking on a whole new meaning. When Torii relaunched in February (now with an extra ‘I’), it was immediately marked as one of the hottest hubs in the area’s already buzzing food scene. With producer and interior design expert turned restauranteur, Gauri Khan at the helm, this pan-Asian spot has been hailed as a visual masterpiece.
The 87-seater restaurant with its sprawling 4,500 sq feet space feels like a slice of a tropical paradise with an outdoor seating area, al fresco bar and an indoor space which houses a secondary bar. Unlike what you’d typically expect of an Asian restaurant, the rich greens and gold accents add a touch of opulence.
The venture which was first launched in 2021 is a fresh reimagining of the space with Chef Stefan Gadit at the helm in his first Mumbai project since his stint at Aditi Dugar’s Sage and Saffron. Having worked primarily in Europe and more recently Dubai, he’s slowly bringing his own signature style to the menu while honouring some of the old classics. His vision is to shape Torii into a space celebrating seasonality and local produce and putting Indian ingredients together with Western techniques.
Magic Mush Cocktail
Magic Mush Cocktail
Their cocktail menu – while perhaps a little vague in terms of descriptions – offers a range of Japanese-inspired flavours from the slightly floral rose-tinted O-Hanami or the umami shiitake notes of the Magic Mush. Pair that with some of their sushi or delve into their tempura section with the crunchy Enoki Mushroom Tempura which pairs well with the cocktails.
As per Chef Gadit’s recommendations, we sampled the Young Coconut Carpaccio which with fresh and light, a pleasant choice for a muggy Mumbai evening, followed by the Dirty Tori, a tuna, salmon and hamachi sushi which delivers in terms of balance and has a satisfying crunch.
The Charcoal Grill section offers a range of hot plates, from Charred Broccoli to Grilled Mackerel (or snapper as it happened to be due to seasonality). We opted for the Caramelized Pork Belly served with a char siu glaze and a tart, spicy, Thai Nam Jim dipping sauce. With its buttery soft texture and contrasting sweet and zingy flavours, it definitely stole the show.
Their Chicken Sliders were a little underwhelming in terms of execution and could have been amped up by leaning further into Korean flavours with a kimchi crunch or a more decisive flavour to the chicken itself. But were offset by the Prawn And Chive Mushi-Gyoza which while simple, had a comforting warmth.
Shibuya Toast

Though the Wok section is reportedly the most popular among locals with familiar rice and noodle dishes, it seems like the small plates of their signature cold dishes, raw bar, snacks and grill are where Torii shines with a colourful and innovative line-up.
We rounded off the meal with the Shibuya Toast which was perfectly golden, served with creme Chantilly and filled with a mix of macerated strawberries, and a side of vanilla ice cream for an extra dose of sweetness.
Overall, the meal hit all the right notes and paired with the charming atmosphere, it makes Torii a space worth visiting. And as Chef Gadit works more of his own vision into the menu, we’re sure to see more innovations in this new-old Bandra destination.
