Mumbai: On the inaugural day of the Mumbai coastal road's north-bound tunnel opening to motorists on Tuesday, a total of 20,450 cars passed through it. The following day, Wednesday, saw 17,910 vehicles utilising the tunnel between 7 am and 8 pm.
The tunnel, which opens up at Marine Drive, leads motorists to Breach Candy. Currently, cars entering the tunnel are being manually monitored since the automatic vehicle counter is not yet in place.
On the first day, Tuesday, peak traffic between 7 pm and 8 pm totaled 2,080 cars, followed by 1,770 vehicles between 5 pm and 6 pm and 1,650 between 6 pm and 7 pm. In comparison, when the south-bound tunnel opened to motorists in March, 16,331 vehicles had used it.
The north-bound section of the road is operational only till Haji Ali, where just four of the eight interchanger arms are operational. Moreover, the north-bound road operates only on weekdays from 7 am to 11 pm.
“Work on the remaining portion of the road is being carried out on weekends and after midnight. Therefore, we need to keep it shut,” said a BMC official, as per the Times of India report.
Meanwhile, completion of the entire stretch of the road is anticipated by October. Currently, the north- and south-bound arms operate in phases. BMC officials indicated that the south-bound arm is set to be fully operational between Marine Drive and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) by the end of July.
The 10.6km-long coastal road, constructed at a cost of Rs 13,983.8 crore, includes a construction cost of Rs 9,383.7 crore along with other administrative charges. It serves as a high-speed corridor comprising tunnels, vehicular interchanges, and bridges.
Although the promenade will be completed soon, amenities such as a jogging track, cycling track, butterfly garden, and other open-to-sky facilities proposed by BMC will see construction begin after the monsoon, requiring at least another year for completion, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore. Additionally, the underground car park, with a capacity of 1,857 spaces, is expected to be ready only by December 2025.
