Pune: Pune is gearing up for a significant milestone in its metro transportation system, with three coaches of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (PMRDA’s) metro line 3 set to arrive in the city by the end of this month. These coaches, vital components of the metro line spanning from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, will undergo thorough testing and trials in the coming month to ensure their readiness for public use.
As per a Hindustan Times report, Umesh Mallawat, the executive engineer of the PMRDA, indicated that they have currently finished 55 per cent of the work on metro line 3. Anticipated to arrive in Pune next month, the initial batch comprises three coaches. Once they reach the metro depot, they will undergo assessments to ensure operational efficiency and safety.
The construction of these coaches, completed in Chennai, underwent a rigorous inspection last month. Expected to reach Pune within the next 15 days, they will undergo further evaluations at the metro depot before the commencement of trial runs, marking a significant step towards the project’s completion and eventual launch.
Metro Line 3, extending 23.5 kilometres with 23 stations, including prominent ones like Hinjewadi, Megha Police, Wipro Chowk, and Shivaji Chowk, aims to provide efficient transportation options to commuters, significantly reducing travel time between key areas. At Shivajinagar, it will integrate with existing lines 1 and 2, enhancing connectivity across the city.
The PMRDA is executing the metro line 3 project under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with the Tata Group and Siemens forming a special purpose vehicle (SPV), Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, for its execution.
To support metro line 3, a dedicated depot has been established on 55 acres of MIDC land in Hinjewadi, serving as a central hub for maintenance and operations.
In April, Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited initiated the launch of 8.5-metre-wide segments for the construction of a double-decker viaduct on Ganesh Khind Road toward Pune University, facilitating connectivity. Additionally, significant traffic route alterations have been enforced since May 4 to expedite the launch of girders and facilitate construction.
Over the preceding two years, notable advancements have occurred in the physical infrastructure of the Pune Metro. The erection of pillars has been successfully accomplished, marking a crucial milestone. This foundational work paves the way for the concluding phases of construction and testing, edging the project closer to its eagerly awaited launch.
