Pune: In a statement issued on Monday, the India Meteorological Department warned that central and western areas of India will be the worst affected by the upcoming heatwave. Pune and its surrounding regions are bracing for warm nights as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heat-wave-like conditions in the coming days.
IMD's short-range forecast highlighted the likelihood of heat waves in parts of Vidarbha for the next few days, with parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha also expected to experience hail accompanied by thunder and lightning, as per an Indian Express report.
The prevailing wind discontinuity over parts of Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh has been attributed to these weather patterns, as mentioned in the forecast. The IMD has warned that nights in Pune will remain warm and stifling due to cloud cover preventing the escape of long-range radiation, consequently heating up the ground.
The intense March heat in Maharashtra serves as a prelude to what is expected to be an unusually hot few months ahead, as indicated by the latest monthly forecast from IMD on Monday.
The forecast predicts above-normal day and night temperatures in Maharashtra, along with parts of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, during the April to June period.
Attributing the sweltering outlook to the El Ni?o phenomenon, IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra expects above-normal heatwave conditions in Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, and Marathwada, where heatwaves may last two to eight days longer than usual, as reported by The Times of India.

Weekly Weather Forecast

The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 37–40 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature will hover around 18–21 degrees Celsius, as per Pune-Shivajinagar's IMD forecast.

Precautionary Measures

Stressing the need to take precautionary measures for the upcoming elections, which are to be held in this timeframe, Union Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Riju has emphasised the necessity to "prepare in advance", citing the large size of the Indian electorate.
The IMD asked the authorities to take proactive measures to avoid strain on infrastructure such as power grids and transportation systems.
"To address these challenges, it is imperative for authorities to take proactive measures," the IMD said. "This includes providing access to cooling centres, issuing heat advisories, and implementing strategies to alleviate urban heat island effects in affected areas," the IMD said.
