Manikarnika- Mani means earring and Karnam means ear. The name "Manikarnika" is derived from a mythological story that states that Lord Vishnu dug a well here for Lord Shiva and Parvati to bathe, which is now known as Manikarnika Kund.
When Lord Shiva was bathing in this pond, one of his earrings fell into the well, since then this place came to be known as Manikarnika Ghat. It is believed that the Manikarnika Kund which eventually merged with the River Ganga.

It is believed that when Goddess Adi Shakti incarnated as Goddess Sati jumped into the fire due to the insult of her father, Lord Shiva took her burning body to the Himalayas. At that time, seeing the plight of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu threw his Sudarshan Chakra on the burning body of Devi Adi Shakti, due to which her body broke into 51 pieces. Wherever the pieces of his body fell on earth, they were declared Shakti Peethas.
At the same time, the earring of Mata Sati had fallen on Manikarnika Ghat, hence it was established as a Shakti Peeth and was named Manikarnika because Manikarna means earring in Sanskrit. Since then, this place came to be known as Manikarnika and has special significance for the Hindus.
