HEART ATTACK

The heart is one of the most crucial organs of the body which beats without rest throughout our lives – whether we are working out, eating our meals, or even as we sleep. The heart is the size of a fist but powerfully pumps blood across the body through the blood vessels - its pipeline. However, when blood and oxygen supply to this organ is constricted or stops suddenly due to a blockage in an artery, the heart is starved of oxygen and its muscles come into distress. This is a classic heart attack scenario.

Heart attacks can be fatal if not treated right away as the lack of blood deprives it of oxygen and heart muscles start to die as a consequence. To prevent extensive damage to heart muscles, one needs to provide quick treatment to anyone who is in the throes of myocardial infarction.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), heart diseases are the leading cause of death globally with an estimated 17.9 million deaths annually; and India has one of the world’s highest incidences of cardiovascular crisis with 4.77 million deaths for the same period.

The symptoms of a heart attack include any or all of the following:

  1. Chest pain
  2. Tightness in the chest
  3. Radiating pain in arm, shoulder, back
  4. Jaw pain
  5. Pain in either of the arms
  6. Lightheadedness
  7. Anxiety
  8. Abnormal heart rate
  9. Profuse sweating for no apparent cause
  10. Breathlessness

Following a diet high in saturated and trans fats and while being low in fibre, proteins, and healthy fats along with a lack of exercise, being stressed, and suffering from chronic anxiety are the most important contributors to elevating one's heart attack risk.
