After a recent subcritical nuclear test by the United States, North Korea on Monday said it adds new tension to the international nuclear arms race. And has accused the United States of a ‘dangerous act’ and of hypocrisy.
Using the country's official name, North Korea's foreign ministry stated on Monday that "The Democratic People's Republic of Korea will not allow a strategic imbalance and security vacuum to be created on the Korean peninsula," Newsweek reported.
Last week, the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced a successful experiment conducted at the Nevada National Security Site. The NNSA announced its intention to boost the frequency of these experiments to gather additional information on nuclear weapons materials, avoiding the need for explosive testing. The US has refrained from conducting nuclear explosion tests since 1992, adhering to a moratorium ever since.
"Has no right to comment on anyone's threat of nuclear war," the North Korean statement said, referring to the United States as the nation that has the most nuclear test history.
The ministry also mentioned that the US is preparing ‘an actual nuclear operation exercise’ with Seoul in August and that it had sent nuclear-capable submarines to South Korea last year for the first time in decades.
In response to the developing US nuclear threat, the ministry promised that the North would ‘thoroughly’ protect the security and rights and interests of the state through effective measures.
In the past, North Korea has threatened to carry out ‘catastrophic aftermath’ drills with other countries in order to stimulate a reaction to Pyongyang's potential use of nuclear weapons.
After carrying out six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017, North Korea has now threatened to carry out a seventh and has also updated its nuclear strategy in 2022, abandoning its non first-use policy. In recent months, the nation has significantly increased the number of ballistic missile tests, including some that are capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The nuclear aspirations of North Korea continue to worry the international community. In order to stop Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs, South Korea, Japan, and the United States have consistently demanded stricter international measures and the execution of UN Security Council sanctions.
According to analysts, Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, believes that having a nuclear arsenal is crucial for preventing foreign interference and strengthening his bargaining power.
In response to North Korea's threats, Tokyo, Seoul, and Washington have decided to strengthen their trilateral cooperation.
Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in described how Kim had "sincerely explained his commitment to denuclearization" during their first summit in 2018 in his memoir, which was published on Saturday.
Senior research fellow Hong Min of the Korea Institute of National Unification told NK News that Kim's remarks were probably to manipulate perceptions intended to change people's minds while continuing to develop his nuclear weapons.
The US Department of Defense did not provide an immediate response to a written request for comment.
