Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot after a political event on Wednesday. The 59-year-old was in a life-threatening condition and underwent surgery. Officials are yet to provide an update on his health. Meanwhile, several local media outlets cited witnesses and visuals from the scene to report that the person who shot the politician is a writer named Juraj Cintula. Authorities have not confirmed these reports.
Now, a video of the alleged suspect has surfaced on social media. In the clip, he can be seen saying 'I don't agree with the government's policy', according to Russian state-owned outlet Sputnik.
Slovak defence minister Robert Kalinak adressed reporters outside the hospital to say the prime minister's condition is 'serious' after he suffered 'serious trauma'. "The situation is bad," he added. The official also confirmed that Fico was shot five times.
When asked about the potential motivation behind the shooting, Megan Gittoes, the director of communications at the Henry Jackson Society, told Sky News that the investigation is ongoing.
"We are not clear on motivations. We should wait to hear more information but this is a really extreme event to have taken place," she said. Other officials also maintained the same position.
Local media outlets quoted Cintula's son, who is said to be 'shocked'. Slovak news media reported the suspect was a former security guard at a shopping centre. He is an activist and writer.
Atkuality.sk cites his son as saying his father was the legal holder of a gun licence. "I have absolutely no idea what my father intended, what he planned, what happened," the son said, according to the report.
It is, however, important to note that this report is unverified.
