Although it was initially reported the operation would take few hours. But the latest update provided on PM Fico's health condition by Erik Tomá? for Markíza television informed that the surgery was taking longer than usual as several of his organs were hit. The Slovakian media reports added that the Prime Minister was in a serious condition and that the next few hours were critical.
The country's defence minister Robert Kalinak reaffirmed the surgical procedure was taking place late in the evening. Terming Fico's condition as "extraordinarily serious," Kalinak remarked that the prime minister suffered "serious trauma" after "several shots" were fired.
"In the R. Fica was assassinated today. He has been shot multiple times and is currently in life-threatening condition. At this moment he is transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, because it would take too long to get to Bratislava due to the necessity of an acute procedure. The next few hours will decide," a brief shared on Fico's official Facebook page few hours before read.
The operation is taking place at the FD Roosevelt Hospital in Banska Bystrica, a city near Handlova where Fico was shot. Local media stated that Interior Minister Matú? ?utaj E?tok and Slovak Republic's Minister of Health, JUDr. Zuzana Dolinková, were present at the medical facility. A police cordon was deployed outside the hospital's emergency department. Earlier, the President of the Country had described the attack on Fico as an assassination attempt.
