On May 15 (Wednesday), Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia was shot in Handlova, situated about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital, Bratislava. The incident left him in critical condition and he remains under treatment. At this critical juncture, constitutional processes come into play with the prime minister is unable to fulfill his duties. These processes likely involve the activation of contingency plans to ensure the continuity of governance.
In Slovakia's political structure, alongside the prime minister, there exists a vice prime minister who may play a pivotal role in times of crisis or absence of the prime minister. Moreover, the government comprises several ministers who can assume leadership responsibilities in the prime minister's absence.
However, Prime Minister Fico's critical condition means that authorities need to adhere to established constitutional protocols to address the leadership vacuum effectively. Beyond the executive branch, Slovakia's political landscape includes the president and the chairman of the parliament, who hold significant influence and authority.
With Prime Minister Fico incapacitated and undergoing emergency medical treatment, it is likely that these constitutional processes will be set in motion to ensure the continuity and stability of governance during this period of uncertainty.
The attack took place in front of the city's Palace of Culture following a government meeting, as Fico addressed a crowd. Amidst the speech, multiple gunshots rang out, causing Fico to collapse. He sustained five gunshot wounds, with critical hits to his abdomen, head and chest.
The alleged perpetrator, a 71-year-old man, Juraj Cintula, was swiftly apprehended by Fico's security team. While investigations continue, authorities are considering the attack to be politically motivated.
