A bus burst into flames on busy London streets

London: A bus caught fire on a busy street in west London's Twickenham on Saturday afternoon. Huge flames engulfed the bus as black smoke filled the streets as onlookers watched firefighters battle the huge flames.
Terrifying videos from the scene show huge flames and billowing smoke filling Richmond Road in Twickenham.
The 490 bus burst into flames in the middle of the street at about 13:20 BST on Richmond Road, according to a Met Police spokesperson. Five fire engines and about 30 firefighters attended the scene and it took over an hour to extinguish the fire.
The driver and the passengers had already left the bus and nobody was injured in the incident. No one was hurt and the road has been closed for the rest of the day while investigations continue, the London Fire Brigade said.
"One diesel single decker bus was destroyed by the fire. All passengers and the driver left the bus before the brigade's arrival. There are no reports of any injuries. The road remains closed following the incident and people are advised to avoid the area for the rest of the day," said a spokesperson.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said, "Emergency services were called at 1320hrs on Saturday, 18 May, to a bus on fire in Richmond Road, Twickenham. There were no reported injuries. Enquires continue alongside London Fire Brigade colleagues."

Massive plume of smoke

Eye-witness Samuel DeMarchi told the BBC: "I live very close to where the fire was and I was going out to run some errands. I looked up and saw a massive plume of smoke, and my neighbours and I went down an alleyway and saw the bus on fire. As far as I know, no one was hurt and everyone got off safely. There were definitely people on the bus, but they all got off the bus before something bad could happen."
The 490 route runs from Richmond Station to Heathrow Terminal 5. Transport for London launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and are working with bus operators, manufacturers, and suppliers to improve safety in the industry.
This is the fourth London bus to catch fire this year. A double-decker bus exploded in west London earlier this January. The same month, a blast destroyed a bus completely in east London and another bus’s back was ripped off in an explosion in south London.
