Washington DC/Tel Aviv: As the war in Gaza rages on, ties between the United States and Israel have hit a new low. With the two allies already in disagreement on their wartime strategy, relations hit a new low after the US abstained from voting in the UN Security Council, which passed a resolution for the first time calling for an immediate ceasefire.
American support for Israel in its war against Hamas began to decline earlier this year with top diplomat Antony Blinken and President Joe Biden publically criticising Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Biden and Netanyahu At Crossroads

Tensions also rose when Biden advised Israel - publicly and privately - against its assault in Rafah. Describing the assault as a "red line that shouldn't be crossed", Biden urged Netanyahu to avoid its invasion into the city in southern Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided against it and stated that his "red line" is to make sure "October 7 doesn't happen again" and for that, Israel needs to enter Rafah.
Additionally, insiders have revealed that Joe Biden is "frustrated" and "fed up" with his Israeli counterpart. Sources close to the matter have claimed that Biden is "extremely frustrated" at Netanyahu's refusal for a ceasefire and keeps "giving him hell".

US-Israel Wartime Relations Hit New Low

More than five months into the Israel-Hamas war, the United States Security Council demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the first time.
This development came after the US, which has vetoed and rejected many draft resolutions, abstained from voting.
This resolution presented by Alergia, was passed after Russia and China vetoed a US draft last week. As per this draft, the UNSC calls for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan.
The resolution also calls for the truce to lead to a "lasting, sustainable ceasefire" and the immediate release of all hostages being held by Hamas.
Israel was not only critical of the UN Security Council, but also its primary ally the US. After the resolution was adopted, the Israeli PM cancelled a delegation to Washington following the US' failure to block the proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza.
As per a statement from the PM's office - "In light of the change in the American position, Prime Minister Netanyahu decided the delegation would not leave".
As per Netanyahu, Washington has failed to block the resolution which was a "clear retreat" from its previous position. His office added that the PM is of the view that this will hurt war efforts against Hamas and for the release of the 130 hostages being held captive in Gaza.
However, the White House has denied that its absention was a change in American policy. The Israeli delegation was headed to Washington to discuss the Rafah assault. This delegation was scheduled to visit the US at the request of Joe Biden, who demanded a plan for Rafah ahead of Israel's assault.
After Netanyahu cancelled the delegation, the US stated it was "disappointed" but would continue to its raise its concerns to the Israeli government.
“It’s disappointing. We’re very disappointed that they won’t be coming to Washington DC to allow us to have a fulsome conversation with them about viable alternatives to them going in on the ground in Rafah," stated John Kirby, the spokesperson for the National Security Council.
