In a commendable display of courage and resilience, Madelyn, a 21-year-old student at the University of Chicago, thwarted an assailant's attempt to rob her by swiftly disarming him of his firearm. The incident transpired amidst a series of robberies that unfolded within minutes of each other on a bustling thoroughfare near the university campus on Wednesday.
Surveillance footage captured the pivotal moment when Madelyn confronted the perpetrator and wrested control of his weapon, effectively preventing him from absconding with her belongings. Recounting the harrowing encounter, Madelyn recounted, "I'm able to get my hands on the gun... and remove the magazine from the gun, and I toss it into the bush," according to The Daily Mail.
Clad in a black hoodie and light-colored pants, the masked assailant absconded from the scene in a black vehicle alongside an accomplice, after a spree of robberies that targeted multiple students in rapid succession. The initial incident occurred at approximately 2:50 pm, when two students were accosted at gunpoint on the Hyde Park campus. Moments later, Madelyn found herself confronted by two armed individuals demanding her possessions as she traversed a thoroughfare adjacent to the campus, Daily Mail reported.
Detailing the confrontation, Madelyn recalled, "I was just walking home from class, and I see a man in a mask approach me. And he kind of comes towards me and I think to myself, 'just keep walking,' but then we have an altercation." Despite the perilous circumstances, Madelyn summoned the resolve to resist the assailant's advances, ultimately seizing control of the firearm.
In the aftermath of the incident, Madelyn reflected on her actions, telling the Daily Mail, "I think fight definitely kicked in, but I'm in no way advocating of resisting armed robbery. I think it was really not the right decision looking back on it." However, her swift action undoubtedly averted potential harm and facilitated the ongoing investigation by law enforcement authorities.
Chicago police have launched an inquiry into the robberies, underscoring the urgency of identifying and apprehending the perpetrators to prevent further occurrences. Meanwhile, the University of Chicago Police issued a cautionary advisory urging vigilance and advising against resistance in the event of an armed robbery, the Daily Mail wrote.
Despite the unsettling nature of the incident, Madelyn expressed confidence in the safety measures implemented by the university and law enforcement agencies. Nevertheless, she emphasized the importance of apprehending the culprits to prevent future acts of violence.
