Chennai Rain Disrupts Power, Avadi Worst Hit; Will Showers Continue? Check IMD Forecast

The recent bout of rain and strong winds in Chennai led to power outages in several areas, with Avadi being the worst affected. Despite assurances from Tangedco officials that alternative power sources were arranged for most areas, residents faced frustration due to the lack of communication and support.

Chennai: Several parts of the city plunged into darkness soon after the rain started in Chennai. Its surroundings were also affected by the rain, which was left without electricity due to strong winds and sudden rain. Chennai has been experiencing rains for several days now. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the city may witness moderate rain or a thunderstorm on Friday, June 14.
While there is still a possibility of rain or a thunderstorm, there will be a partly cloudy sky during the day, said the met office. The maximum temperature during this time will be 36 degrees Celsius.
Among all of the localities, Avadi was affected mostly, with around 70 electricity feeders from the Alamathy substation failing on Wednesday night. Tangedco officials stated that while the transformers were not damaged by the winds, the power cut was caused by the feeders tripping, said a report by Times of India.
However, the officials managed to arrange alternative power sources for most areas. “We somehow arranged power supply from alternative sources for most areas,” said an official. Red Hills, Kodambakkam, Pallikaranai, Ambattur, and Chintadripet were among the other affected areas in the city.

Resident Struggled to Voice Complaints

Residents were frustrated by the lack of communication from Tangedco and their inability to reach out for help. Many complained about low voltage in places like Madipakkam, Kovilambakkam, and Pallikaranai.
“When the power supply was not restored even after two hours, all of us tried to contact the section office. To which, they casually responded that the electricity will be restored on Thursday. We received their response after multiple attempts of contacting them. To suspend the power supply for rain, which did not even last for 30 minutes, shows how poor the infrastructure is,” a resident of Puliyur near Kodambakkam, J Ashish said, quoted by the media report.
Not just the power supply cut but the residents were also angry because they could not get through to Tangedco staff to voice their complaints. "The Minnagam call centre and 1912 helpline were not working," said Kathirvel from Kovilambakkam.
"Tangedco should inform us about power cuts and how they plan to fix them. But it seems like they are not taking us seriously." Tangedco officials said that, except for Avadi, power cuts in other areas might have been caused by local issues and would have been dealt with by Tangedco staff.
