Gurugram: A sanitation worker was killed after a speeding car hit her triggering protests in Gurugram on Thursday. Police said that the incident happened around 8am and identified the deceased as Saroj, 52, a Sarai Alawardi village resident, who was working near the main road at Vatika Chowk.
A Hyundai Xcent car used in taxi service came at a high speed from the Golf Course Road Extension and hit Saroj. The impact of the crash was so severe that the woman was thrown several feet away upon jumping, resulting in her instantaneous death. Later, the driver allegedly abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot.
After the incident, other sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram gathered at the accident scene, blocked the roads and staged protests. They demanded a change in deployment, as they are generally deployed at high-speed main roads which becomes a risk to their lives. They also demanded the immediate arrest of the driver.
The police also said that Saroj was a permanent employee at MCG and was recently transferred to Badshahpur.
Kailash Kumar Sangreliya, president of the MCG workers’ union pointed that the sanitation workers are not provided with basic safety equipment like traffic cones and reflector jackets. He also added that the union demands proper compensation and employment for a family member of the deceased.
An FIR has been registered against the cab driver, under section 279 for rash driving, 304A for death due to negligence of the Indian Penal Code at the Badshahpur police station.
Inspector Satish Kumar, SHO of Badshahpur police station said that the police have arrested the driver and identified him as Chand, who hails from Uttar Pradesh. The police also seized his car and initiated the questioning process.
After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family of the deceased.
