Kuwait Fire Tragedy Mourning Families Receive Remains of 23 Keralites At Kochi Airport
Kochi: A heart-wrenching scene unfolded at Kochi International Airport as the mortal remains of those killed in the fire incident in Kuwait on June 12 arrived in Kerala on Friday. The Indian Air Force (IAF) C30J aircraft touched down, carrying the bodies of 45 Indian nationals. Kerala, where the majority of families have one or other family members in the Middle East, suffered the maximum casualties with more than 20 people dying in the fire at the Al-Mangaf building, which hosted immigrants and reportedly lacked basic security safeguards.
According to the embassy, among the 45 Indians who lost their lives, 23 were from Kerala, seven from Tamil Nadu, and three each from Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, there were two victims from Odisha, and one each from Bihar, Punjab, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Haryana.
The devastating fire claimed the lives of 49 people, the majority of whom were Indian nationals. Among the victims were also Pakistani nationals, people from the Philippines, Egypt, and Nepal. The building reportedly housed nearly 200 migrant workers. Millions of foreign workers make up the majority of the labour force in Kuwait and some of its Gulf neighbours and often live in overcrowded accommodation.
Around 35 ambulances and an equal number of police vehicles were present at the airport, awaiting the arrival of the bodies of the victims.
Officials coordinated arrangements for the reception of the caskets. Separate seating was provided for the families near the podiums where the bodies were to be placed, allowing them a moment to pay their respects in peace.
State ministers K Rajan, P Rajeeve, and Veena George, along with Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan and BJP state chief K Surendran, offered solace and support to the grieving families. Union Minister and BJP leader Suresh Gopi also joined in receiving the bodies, standing in solidarity with those mourning the loss of their loved ones.
Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi praised the External Affairs Ministry's coordination for the injured and announced his plans to receive the bodies of Malayalees at the international airport, cancelling his other engagements for the day.
