Besides the love story of Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal) and Tajdar (Taha Shah Badussha), another couple's romance also caught the eye of several fans of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Saima, played by Shruti Sharma, and Iqbal, played by Rajat Kaul, live and work in Heeramandi for Manisha Koirala's Mallikajaan, the couple goes through several obstacles by the time the show ends. In the eight-part series Heeramandi, Sharma's character Saima has several setbacks before she becomes a singing star. She must leave her former life behind, including Iqbal. While the two actors sold the unfinished love stories between their characters, Sharma revealed that they worked hard to create Saima and Iqbal's relationship on screen.
In an exclusive conversation with Zoom, Sharma called Kaul "amazing" and collaborative. She recalled, "Honestly, we just met twice before the scene. We had one reading session and one photo session. We just sat with Sir [Bhansali] on the day of the shoot, we rehearsed, and it happened so beautifully because he's also a very professional actor. He was totally into his character."
Sharma added, "Whenever Sir said action, I was not Shruti, and he was not Rajat. We both were Iqbal and Saima. We knew that Saima and Iqbal they have only two to three scenes together. [Through that] we have to establish a relationship. It's very easy to portray a blooming love story. As an actor, I find it very easy. But to establish a relationship for two years they have been together, the kind of synchronicity you want with your actor, it cannot happen if your co-actor is not strong. Our chemistry just happened, and we both did our job."

From her audition to landing the role in Heeramandi, Sharma shared that she didn't want to leave anything to chance since it was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production. After getting scouted from Shruti Mahajan's casting team to learning classical music to better her part, the actress put pressure on herself to not give too many retakes.
She stated, "I was on my tiptoes. First of all, working with Sanjay sir is a commendable thing. It was my first and only chance. I just gave my 200 per cent in every take, no matter how many takes happened. I performed my soul out. Even if you are not able to see my face on screen, if you are only hearing my voice, it should sound that I am Saima."
With her due diligence in every take, her dedication impressed Bhansali as he appreciated her work. Sharma said, "I remember the day when he clapped for me, and he gave me a flying kiss. He never scolded me on set. It was on seven clouds, I was crying and happy, overwhelmed."
