Kolkata: Anwarul Azim Anar, a Bangladeshi MP, was smothered to death with a pillow as soon as he entered his flat in New Town near Kolkata, an official of West Bengal CID said on Wednesday. The accused, Mohammad Siyam Hussain, was arrested in Nepal and admitted to the crime during interrogation. He added that a woman helped him strangle the Bangladeshi politician.
The woman who aided him was stated to be the girlfriend of Akhtaruzzaman, a US national who is the prime accused in the case.
“After killing the MP, they chopped his body into several small pieces, put them into plastic bags and then dumped them off in several parts of New Town, Bagjola canal before fleeing to different hideouts,” he told PTI.
Some parts of the body were put into a trolley suitcase and dumped somewhere near the Bangaon border with Bangladesh, he said.
The search operation for the body parts is currently underway.
On Sunday, the state CID recovered parts of human bones near a canal in South 24 district Parganas district after they interrogated Siyam, who was arrested by the Nepal Police and extradited to India.
After he was brought to West Bengal on Saturday evening, Hussain was sent to 14-day custody by a court in Barasat in North 24 Parganas district.
The initial investigation into the case revealed that Akhtaruzzaman, the MP’s close friend, paid around Rs 5 crore to those involved in the crime.
Akhtaruzzaman has a flat in Kolkata and it is probable that he is currently in the US, the CID officers said.
After a complaint was filed with the local police on May 18 by Gopal Biswas, a resident of Baranagar in north Kolkata and an acquaintance of the Bangladeshi politician, efforts to locate the missing MP began. The politician had reportedly arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment, PTI reported.
After arriving, Anar was staying at Biswas' residence. In his complaint Biswas mentioned that Anar left his Baranagar residence in the afternoon of May 13 for a doctor's appointment. He was expected to be back home for dinner. Anar's disappearance led to Biswas filing a complaint with the local police.
