Cairo: Following Saudi Arabia's stern warning to Israel for the creation of Palestine, Egypt has now threatened the suspension of the Camp David Peace Accords with the Jewish state.
This warning from Egypt comes amidst the ongoing Israeli offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza. Rafah is also a town on the border with Egypt. As per Egyptian officials and a Western diplomat, Israeli's operation in the city threatens the main aid and supply route for Gaza.
As the Israel-Hamas war enters Day 129 and Tel Aviv shows no signs of backing down its offensive, Egypt has threatened to suspend the Camp David Accords. This warning from Egypt comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that sending troops into Rafah was necesaary for Israel in order to achieve "complete victory" against Hamas.
The city of Rafah in southern Gaza is the last refuge for Palestinians in Gaza. During the first phase of the war, millions of Gazans fled to Rafah and southern Gaza amid Israel's offensive in northern Gaza. With Israeli troops in Rafah, Gazans have nowhere left to go.
Egypt has warned Israel against its operations in Rafah and stated that it will revoke the peace treaty with Israel if the fighting in Rafah does not stop. Egypt is also fearful of a mass influx of Palestinians, who may not be allowed to return to their homes.
Before the Camp David Accords were signed, Israel and Egypt fought a total of five wars. The landmark peace treaty was brokered by the United States in 1978. With this, Tel Aviv and Cairo signed several political agreements which included a treaty governing the deployment of forces on both sides of the border.
Before Egypt's warning, Saudi Arabia issued a stern warning to Israel stating that there would be no diplomatic ties between Tel Aviv and Riyadh unless Israel paves the way for the creation of a Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
