On Wednesday morning, Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, was struck by a powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the magnitude scale, as reported by the Taiwan Central Weather Administration. The seismic activity caused power outages in various parts of the city, according to an observer cited by Reuters.
Local people have shared multiple videos of the earthquake that are currently going viral on social media:
Following the earthquake, Japan issued a tsunami alert, with the country's meteorological agency forecasting a potential tsunami reaching heights of up to 3 meters (9.8 feet).
Additionally, an evacuation advisory was issued for coastal areas near the southern prefecture of Okinawa shortly after the earthquake triggered the tsunami warning.
On television, structures in Hualien, in the east, were shown toppling off their foundations. The capital Taipei felt the earthquake, which struck at 7:58 in the morning.
Miyakojima island and other isolated Japanese islands close to Taiwan were predicted to see tsunami waves as high as three meters (10 feet) right away, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Volcano Discovery wrote the earthquake struck close to Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan, at a shallow depth of 10 km under the epicenter. Because they occur closer to the surface, shallow earthquakes are felt more intensely than deeper ones. Within the following few hours or minutes, as seismologists examine the data and fine-tune their estimates, or as other agencies provide their findings, the precise magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake may change.
The earthquake was quite hazardous if the preliminary depth and magnitude measurements are accurate. It could have disastrous effects on infrastructure and people, most likely causing extensive and severe damage, particularly in places close to the epicenter.
