After Joel Cauchi, 40, was identified as the suspect in the April 13 stabbing at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney, Australia, his personal life is being subjected to intense media coverage. On Monday, the suspect's father, Andrew Cauchi, hit out at the media for their "lack of compassion" in covering the news of his son's actions.
Andrew Cauchi lashed out at the reporters who were present outside their family home in Toowoomba, Queensland for the coverage related to the incident. He said that he was fine until the media arrived, per a report by the Daily Mail. According to the report, he did this before going on the feed a flock of pigeons he rears in his backyard.
"How do you think I feel? How's your sensitivity," he was quoted saying in the report. "I felt alright until you got here."
Joel Cauchi went on a stabbing spree at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney on April 13, killing six people so far, and injuring at least 12. Among the injured was also a nine-month-old infant. He started the rampage at around 3:20 p.m. local time and continued till 4:00 p.m. when he was fatally shot by responding police officer Amy Scott on the fifth floor of the shopping center.
The New South Wales police said that Cauchi did not have a criminal past, but had several run-ins with the law enforcement in New South Wales and Queensland over mental health-related issues. According to the Daily Mail, his parents are "very religious," and described their son's action as "truly horrific".
