Joel Cauchi has been identified as the man behind the six stabbing killings that occurred in Bondi Junction. According to police, Cauchi, 40, a native of the Brisbane region with a history of mental health problems, relocated to Sydney from Queensland a month ago.
Cauchi was not associated with any specific ideology, and the police are handling the horrifying assault as a mental health issue. A 'very modest storage facility' in Sydney, which Cauchi hired out soon after the transfer, is presently being searched by police. It was said that he had no regular residence and was sleeping rough.
Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke gave an update on the progress of the investigation into the violent event that happened at Bondi Junction Westfield on the first day of the school holidays during a news briefing on Sunday. The Assistant Commissioner said that the family of the person who is involved has been contacted by investigators and has cooperated with law enforcement, wrote The Daily Mail.
Assistant Commissioner Cooke stressed that despite thorough investigation, no concrete proof or intelligence has emerged to yet that would indicate an ideology or other specific driving force behind the attacker's conduct. As of right now, the overwhelming evidence from the investigation suggests that mental health issues had a major role in the occurrence.
The inquiry is still centered on determining how the attacker obtained the weapon—a 30-centimeter hunting knife, according to witnesses—and how it was used in the attack. Police officers are still closely monitoring any routes that may lead to the acquisition of that weapon, the publication wrote.
The upsetting event occurred on Saturday at around 3:20 pm in the busy area of Bondi Junction Westfield, and the authorities reacted quickly. Online camera footage and eyewitness reports show chaotic scenes as consumers ran scared away from the attacker brandishing the aforementioned sword.
Inspector Amy Scott, who just so happened to be patrolling nearby, showed incredible bravery and quick thinking. Inspector Scott tackled the attacker as soon as he entered the retail complex because he was a direct threat to public safety. She was so brave that she took the weapon and stopped the attacker on her own. When he approached menacingly, she had to use deadly force to defend herself, according to The Daily Mail.
Inspector Scott's quick thinking and action prevented more damage and guaranteed the safety of bystanders in the area.
