Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau has called out China for its "persistent" interference during the 2019 and 2021 elections. Addressing a commission on Wednesday, the Canadian PM satetd that Beijing has tried to meddle in the elections, but the result of these elections were not impacted.
Trudeau's testimony to the commission comes after Canada ruled out India for foreign interference. Senior poll officials told the probe panels that "no interference was found" during the 2019 local polls and the 2021 national polls.
During his testimony, the Canadian Prime Minister stated that despite Chinese interference, the two elections were conducted in a "free and fair" manner.
An intelligence report submitted before the commission described China's interference as "sophisticated, pervasive and persistent". Despite this, Trudeau assured that the results of the elections were decided by Canadians.
“Despite attempts by foreign states to interfere, those elections held in their integrity. They were decided by Canadians,” stated the Prime Minister.
“While individual [Chinese] officials may well have expressed a preference or another, the impression we got and consistently would get is that … it just would seem very improbable that the Chinese government itself would have a preference in the election,” Trudeau added further.
Canada's spy agency had accused a total of five countries - India, Pakistan, Iran, Russia and China. However, a senior poll official told the probe panel that there was no interference from India's end, clearing New Delhi's name.
Amid Trudeau's allegations, China has refuted the claims and accused the Canadian PM of "slandering China during the hearing".
“China strongly deplores and resolutely opposes this. China has never had any interest in interfering in Canada’s internal affairs,” stated a spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy in Canada.
