Shocking report on UK's Blood Transfusion Scandal released
London: United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak issued a public apology in the UK Parliament after shocking results of the blood transfusion scandal report.
The UK Prime Minister said that he will pay “comprehensive compensation” to the people affected.
According to the 2500-page Infected Blood inquiry report, 30,000 people were infected with viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis after being given tainted blood in Britain between the 1970s and early 1990s. It was also proven that deliberate attempts had been made to conceal the disaster in the past including evidence of Whitehall officials destroying documents.
Sunak described the release of the report as a ‘day of shame’ for the British state.
“Time and again people in positions of power and trust had the chance to stop the transmission of those infections and failed to do so” Sunak added while giving his speech in the House of Commons.
3000 victims have already died to these wrong blood transfusions and more will follow in what has been described as the biggest treatment failure by Britain’s state-run National Health Service.
At one school where 122 pupils with Hemophilia were given infected blood products between 1970 and 1987, only 30 now survive.
One of the major reasons of this occurrence was that the in 1986, the Health Service led blood transfusions without proper HIV and Hepatitis C screening. Also, blood was imported from America where people were paid to donate. This led to people at high risk of infection including drug addicts and prison inmates coming forward to donate their blood.
