Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot in an alleged assassination attempt outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova, local media reports said on Wednesday. A video of the incident shows a suspect being detained. Four shots were fired after a government meeting, one hit the prime minister in the abdomen. The 59-year-old is in life-threatening condition, his office said according to news agency Reuters.
Slovak President Zuzana Caputova condemned the 'brutal and ruthless' attack on Robert Fico. "I’m shocked. I wish Robert Fico a lot of strength in this critical moment and a quick recovery from this attack," he said in a post on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.
A video of the incident surfaced on social media. It showed chaos at the scene. The suspect was detained and Fico was being taken to the hospital.
While initial reports said that Fico was hit once, a post by the Slovak PM's team on his Facebook page says he was "shot multiple times". A witness at the scene earlier told Reuters he had heard several shots before seeing a man detained by police.
In the footage published by Slovak news channel TA3 shows the aftermath of Robert Fico's shooting. The PM can be seen pulled to a car after being shot. Two men in suits appear to lift him off the floor under his arms before taking him to the waiting vehicle with his feet dragging on the ground. Fico is thrust into the back seat before the car then speeds away.
Authorities have not released any information about the suspect.
