Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and injured on Wednesday outside the House of Culture in Handlova. The Slovakian Parliament later suspended its meetings, stating that it was “significantly” increasing security efforts in response to the attack on the Prime Minister.
The accused shot Fico, 59, five times, leaving the prime minister in critical condition. He underwent surgery hours later on Wednesday evening. Visuals of the incident showed his bodyguards escorting him into his armoured limousine.
Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba told news agency Reuters that Robert Fico is no longer in a life-threatening situation. “I was very shocked ... fortunately as far as I know the operation went well - and I guess in the end he will survive ... he's not in a life-threatening situation at this moment,” he said.
Following the attack, Fico was rushed to a hospital in Handlova, where he had been chairing a government meeting. He was then transported by helicopter to the regional capital, Banska Bystrica, for urgent treatment. The condition was too serious for him to be taken to Bratislava.
Slovak news media reported the shooter was a former security guard at a shopping mall, an author of three collections of poetry and a member of the Slovak Society of Writers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on Slovakia’s PM and wished him a speedy recovery. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply shocked at the news of the shooting at Slovakia’s Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Robert Fico. I strongly condemn this cowardly and dastardly act and wish PM Fico a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the people of the Slovak Republic.”
According to local media, the shooter was a former security guard at a shopping mall, an author of three poetry collections, and a member of the Slovak Society of Writers.
"In the R. Fica was assassinated today. He has been shot multiple times and is currently in life-threatening condition. At this moment he is transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, because it would take too long to get to Bratislava due to the necessity of an acute procedure. The next few hours will decide," a brief shared on Fico's official Facebook page on Wednesday read.
