Slovakia PM Robert Fico was shot outside House of Culture in Handlova on Wednesday. The Guardian cited an official from Fico's Smer party to report that the 59-year-old was shot in his abdomen and is in surgery. Several local media reports, citing visuals and witnesses at the scene, report that the man who shot the Slovak PM is a writer and activist named Juraj Cintula.
Serbian news outlet Republika and Plus 7 Dní reported that someone yelled at the event, asking Fico to 'come here', before a shot was heard. According to JOJ TV, 71-year-old man from Levice named Juraj Cintula shot the PM.
Local media outlets further add that Cintula was a Liberal writer and an activist. Reports say that the 71-year-old was working as a security guard at a shopping mall in 2016 when he was beaten up by a drug addict. The story was covered by newspapers and TV channels.
When asked about the possible motive behind the shooting, Megan Gittoes, the director of communications at the Henry Jackson Society, told Sky News that the investigation was ongoing. Several forensic officers were spotted at the scene.
"We are not clear on motivations. We should wait to hear more information but this is a really extreme event to have taken place," she said.
Footage on social media shows the moment that the parliament in Slovakia was suspended on Wednesday. An announcement rang out, informing lawmakers about the shooting.
"Ladies and gentleman, the session is suspended indefinitely because the prime minister of the Slovak Republic has been shot", it said.
