Washington DC: As the Gaza war rages on, the United States is "concerned" that Israel may launch an attack in Lebanon to target Hezbollah militants. This concern comes ahead of Israel's offensive in Rafah, which is the last refuge city of Gazans.
As per a CNN report, US President Joe Biden has expressed his concerns regarding the launch of an offensive in Lebanon. Senior officials from the Biden administration familiar with the matter have stated that Israel may extend its battle to Lebanon to fight back Hamas' ally Hezbollah.
“We are operating in the assumption that an Israeli military operation is in the coming months. Not necessarily imminently in the next few weeks but perhaps later this spring. An Israeli military operation is a distinct possibility," stated a senior Biden administration official to CNN.
The official added that the US is anticipating this operation to take place either "in the next few weeks" or "later this spring".
Since October 7, there have been multiple exchanges between Israeli forces and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Several Israelis and Lebanese residents have also been displaced from their homes due to deadly cross-border strikes.
This concern from the US Government also comes ahead of Israel's offensive in Rafah. The reports for a strike in Lebanon also come amid efforts to implement an urgent ceasefire in Gaza.
US, along with Egypt and Qatar, have been mediating between Israel and Hamas in order to implement an urgent ceasefire in Gaza. As per the latest reports, the US is also planning to airdrop aid into Gaza after reports of Israel blocking food and aid to Gazans surfaced. Since October 7, Israeli bombardment in Gaza have killed 30,000 people, majority of the deaths being attributed to women and children.
