A powerful earthquake of a magnitude of 5.6 struck the North Atlantic Ocean 89 kilometers (55 miles) north of Puerto Rico on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. local time (GMT -4). The earthquake was felt in a wide area, up to San Antonio. It had a fairly shallow depth of 7 km (4.3 mi).
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook Puerto Rico close to San Antonio, Monta?a Barrio, Aguadilla, according to the US Geological Survey.
Tuesday, May 14, 2024, around 8:30 p.m. local time, the earthquake struck at a fairly shallow depth of 9.9 km beneath the epicenter near San Antonio, Monta?a Barrio, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Because they occur closer to the surface, shallow earthquakes are felt more intensely than deeper ones.
Within the next few hours or minutes, as seismologists examine the data and fine-tune their calculations, or as other agencies provide their findings, the precise magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake may change.
The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) subsequently released a second assessment in which they confirmed the earthquake's magnitude of 5.2. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), and the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) are among the other organizations that have reported the same earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.2, 5.2, and 4.6, respectively.
According to preliminary seismic data, there shouldn't have been any major damage from the earthquake, although many individuals in the epicenter area most likely felt minor vibrations.
Arecibo, which has a population of 49,300, is located 119 km away from the epicenter, Mayaguez, which is located 125 km away, and San Antonio, which has a population of 2,300, may have experienced mild shaking.
