Sergei Shoigu- Russia's Defence Minister, said Tuesday that President Vladimir Putin appointed vice-admiral Sergei Pinchuk as commander of the Black Sea Fleet. The appointment came in the backdrop of a major shake-up in the Russian navy in which admiral Alexander Moiseyev was appointed the new overall commander-in-chief, and vice admiral Konstantin Kabantsov as commander of the Northern Fleet.
“On one hand, I congratulate you, on the other I hope you understand the enormous responsibility that lies on your shoulders, and I hope that you will deal with the tasks which will be put before you,” Shoigu told the new appointees in an official video message. Notably, the shakeup comes after the Russian navy suffered several major attacks on its warships from Ukraine.
According to a Kyiv Post report, prominent Russian telegram channels reported on February 15, 2024, that the previous commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Viktor Sokolov, had been replaced. During Solokov’s command, Ukraine inflicted considerable damage on the Black Sea Fleet, including the destruction of landing vessel Tsezar Kunikov on February 14.
In 1993, Pinchuk commenced his service in the navy aboard the Nastoichivy, a newly commissioned warship, which served as the flagship of the Baltic Fleet. He was born on July 26, 1971, in Sevastopol. He completed his education at the Nakhimov Naval School in Saint Petersburg and the P. S. Nakhimov Black Sea Higher Naval School in Sevastopol.
Pinchuk was assigned to lead the Novorossiysk Naval Base within the Black Sea Fleet on December 22, 2011. His responsibilities expanded in July 2016 when he assumed the position of acting commander of the Caspian Flotilla, a role that was formalized on September 20 of the same year. On May 9, 2021, he was appointed deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet, and by October 5, he had ascended to the position of chief of staff and first deputy commander of the fleet.
