Gurugram: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has commenced pre-construction activities for the development of a service road along the Dwarka Expressway, marking a significant milestone nearly two months after receiving government approval.
According to a GMDA official, preliminary work such as site clearance, surface levelling, measurements, and demarcations is currently underway at the project site. Arun Dhankar, the chief engineer of GMDA, assured that manpower and machinery are being mobilised to ensure the timely completion of the project. Dhankar emphasised that the service road will not only enhance connectivity but also improve safety for commuters and pedestrians along the Dwarka Expressway, as per a Times of India report.
The project, which has been in the planning stage for four years, received government approval in March and was subsequently allocated to GMDA on March 14. The service roads, spanning 15.3 kilometres on both sides of the expressway, will significantly reduce the reliance on unauthorised openings, thereby mitigating road safety risks, as highlighted by NHAI concerns earlier.
Describing the project, Dhankar outlined that the service roads, each 7.5 metres wide, will cater to daily commuters from nearby residential, commercial, and institutional areas. Additionally, footpaths and surface drains will be constructed as part of the Rs 99 crore initiative.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, underscoring the urgency of addressing the safety hazards posed by unauthorised access points along the Dwarka Expressway. Sandeep Yadav, a resident of Sector 102, emphasised the importance of expediting the execution of the project to enhance road safety.
The service road project, initially proposed in 2020 and administratively endorsed in June 2022, faced delays in the tendering process. Despite setbacks, the tendering process concluded successfully in June last year, following financial approval received earlier in March.
