About Kaazh

Analysis

The film starts off on a slow note but it begins to grow on you as you get used to the manner of narration and you get to know the characters on screen and their lives better. The film appears to be distinctly different from the manner in which other Tamil films made in India are, with the background score being employed only where necessary.
All of the film's lead characters deliver good performances, which help the director narrate his story convincingly. The story throws light on the fact that life isn't all rosy on the other side as many who dream of going abroad believe it to be. It gives its audience a realistic idea of how difficult it is for migrants to find their footing in a foreign land.
Among other things, the film also takes a potshot at casteism and shows that those with regressive ideas continue to employ them even when they go abroad. That apart, the film also dents the perception that those who are from the same country or place will not cheat one another and can be trusted. One wishes one could explain this in more detail but doing so could spoil the fun for the audience.
The film, to its credit, gives you a comprehensive idea of what life is like when you are a migrant and the challenges you are likely to face.

Performances

Yugendran delivers a fantastic performance as Seenu, a man who is intent on building his own home. In fact, it is his performance that really stands out although all the other actors too deliver good performances.

Verdict

Kaazh is an eye opener of sorts. It is not anything like your regular Tamil films in India. It is a realistic, slow burn drama that gives you a clear understanding of what life is even when you go abroad. The film leaves you with a smile and a sense of satisfaction by the time it ends. Worth a watch.
