Netflix and Yash Raj Films are planning to challenge the interim stay order from the Gujarat High Court on their film Maharaj. The feature film, which is adapted from Saurabh Shah's award-winning Gujarati book Maharaj, was to mark the Bollywood debut of Junaid Khan, the son of superstar Aamir Khan. Maharaj also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari.

Netflix and Yash Raj Films to challenge court order

A source close to the production not only confirmed the decision to challenge the stay order but also told Zoom that the film is based on true events and has been adapted from Shah's book. Shah himself is supporting the film and has said that the film does not vilify anyone or hurt any religious sentiments in the Vaishnav sect community.
Earlier this week, Saurabh Shah tweeted, "Just came back home from the Premiere of my film ‘Maharaj’ at YRF studio. It’s releasing on Netflix—14th June. It’s based on my award winning novel ‘Maharaj’ available on Amazon. Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Siddharth P Malhotra."
On the day of the film's planned release, he visited the place where it all began and wrote, "About 170 years back in time, a young Gujarati Vaishnav writer-journalist named Karsandas Mulji would be summoned to this building for the ‘Maharaj Libel Case’ of 1860-1862, when he was just 28-30 years old. Jadunath Maharaj had sued him for the amount of Rs.50,000/- (today’s Rs 5 crore) for alleged defamatory articles. Today this very building gives strength to yet another Gujarati Vaishnav writer-journalist to stand steadfast against mighty odds."

About the interim stay order against Maharaj

On June 13, the Gujarat High Court granted a interim stay order against the film after a a petition filed by some Hindu groups who stated that the Hindi film would hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. Besides the poster, no other promotion material for the Siddharth P Malhotra film had been released beforehand.
