Explosions were heard Friday at a military base used by Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in the South of Baghdad, Iraq. Initially, Iraqi media Rudaw Media reported the explosion saying that it happened outside the Babylon Governorate in South of Baghdad. Later, Reuters confirmed the explosion citing two PMF and two security sources.
The explosion at the IMF's Forward Operating Base Kalso, or 'FOB Kalso,' caused only material damage and did not lead to any casualties, the two PMF sources speaking to Reuters said. Kalso is located in the town of Iskandariya, around 50 km south of Baghdad.
Here are five points on the attack:
#1 No confirmation from government sources
Government sources have not confirmed the attack to any media organisation, so far.
#2 PMF has released a statement on X
The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) has released a statement on X confirming the attack. X user Joe Truzman of the Long War Journal tweeted the statement.
"An explosion occurred at the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces at the Kalsu military base in the Al-Mashrou district on the highway, north of Babil Governorate. An investigation team immediately arrived at the scene, and the explosion caused material losses and injuries. We will provide you with the details once the preliminary investigation is completed." - PMF.
#3 Videos of the explosion circulated on social media
Several videos of the explosion were circulated on social media. Check one of them out below.
#4 PMF is an Iraq-based armed group with Iran-ties
The PMF initially emerged as a collection of armed groups, many with ties to Iran, which was subsequently acknowledged as an official security force by the Iraqi government. Subgroups within the PMF participated in several months of rocket and drone assaults on U.S. forces in Iraq during Israel’s campaign in Gaza, but halted these activities in February.
#5 Was The Attack By Israel?
The X account @RawsGlobal posted that an US official has confirmed to US-based PBS News that the attack was by Israel. PBS News Hour later tweeted saying it was not clear who was behind the attack. "It was not clear who was responsible for the purported attack, which came a day after a suspected Israeli strike in Iran, but the militia officials blamed U.S. forces," the post read.
