Bengaluru: The construction work for Phase 2A and 2B of the Bengaluru metro rail project, which connects Central Silk Board to Krishnarajapura and Krishnarajapura to Kempegowda International Airport respectively, is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by June 2026. Karnataka Governor Thawaar Chand Gehlot emphasised the significance of infrastructure development in Bengaluru and Tier II cities in the state during his address to the joint session of the State legislature on February 12.
The Governor stated the progress of the Bengaluru metro Phase 2, specifically the Reach 5 new line from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board, stretching over 19.15 km. Notably, a 3.3 km stretch with 16 stations is being constructed using a double-decker model. The project has achieved 98 percent progress and is scheduled to be commissioned by July 2024, as reported by The Hindu Report.
In collaboration with the State Government and Indian Railways, the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project is also underway. The civil work for the Baiyappannahalli-Chikkabanavara corridor, spanning 25 km, is currently in progress. Additionally, the tender for the civil work of the Heelalige-Rajanukunte corridor, covering 46.24 km, has been finalised, and work is expected to commence soon.
To address the issue of traffic congestion in Bengaluru, a feasibility report is being prepared for the construction of a tunnel.
Regarding airport development in Karnataka, the construction of airports in Hassan and Raichur is on track and expected to be completed within the designated timeframe. The Shivamogga airport has already commenced operations in 2023, while the Vijayapura airport is slated to be completed and operational in 2024.
In terms of drinking water supply, the Cauvery Water Supply Phase-5 project aims to provide an additional 775 million liters per day (MLD) of drinking water to 110 village areas within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The project is scheduled to be commissioned in March 2024.
Lastly, the Department of Tourism has formulated a new tourism policy in Karnataka, with plans to implement various schemes to promote educational trips for school children, forest tours, zoos, and adventure tourism. The tourism policy and agenda will be announced soon, outlining effective measures to boost tourism in the state.
