The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has suspended one of its senior professors over the death of a student by suicide in March this year. Notifying the media of the same, a spokesperson for the institute said, “Professor Ashish Sen has been suspended based on the direction of the Board of Governors. Institute is following all due procedures."
Professor Sen was suspended following a complaint by the brother of the student - a Ph.D. scholar - accusing the professor of "putting pressure" on the student.
In a six-page hand-written letter submitted to the Director of the higher education institute, the complainant wrote that his brother was suffering from mental health issues and was receiving medication for it.
Accusing the professor of worsening the situation by putting pressure on the student despite being aware of his condition, the complainant said that his brother committed suicide on March 31 following a meeting with Sen.
“He had a meeting with his supervisor on March 31 morning, came back home, and put up the WhatsApp status ‘I’m not good enough’ before killing himself,” the letter stated. “He informed us that his degree will be delayed because the guide was making him do more work.
Reportedly, the student - who was due to submit his Ph.D. thesis in three months - was also restricted from using the lab.
On the day of his suicide, IIT Madras said that said that the student had an “exemplary academic and research record” and his death was “a big loss to the research community”.
