Srinagar: Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency seat recorded the highest voting percentage of 54.21 till 6 PM in phase 5 of elections, breaking the tracks of the previous two elections. In 2014 it was 49.72% and in 2019 it was 34.17%. The constituency has 17,37,865 registered voters.
The Baramulla parliamentary constituency experienced a real sense of change since the eruption of terrorism when the polling figures broke a 35-year record. In the 1989 Lok Sabha polls, it was difficult to reach 6% percent, while in 2024 it jumped to 59 percent, owing to the improved security situation of the region.
This is the first general election in the Union Territory after the abrogation of Article 370 and the enactment of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. Voting took place in 2,103 polling stations across the constituency, with live webcasting at polling stations.
The voting started at 7 am in the constituency. Long queues of enthusiastic voters waited to cast their vote, the EC said.
"High voter turnout, over 58% in Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency, is very encouraging and shows the people's determination and unwavering faith in democracy. I congratulate and thank the people of Baramulla for joining the Maha Kumbh of our democracy in large numbers," LG Manoj Sinha said.
"I appreciate the hard work of all the stakeholders to ensure free, fair, accessible, inclusive & peaceful conduct of voting. Happy to see young voters expressing and celebrating their unshakable faith in democratic values. Hope this positive trend will continue in the next phase," he added.
National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, People's Conference president Sajad Gani Lone, and jailed head of the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, are among the 22 candidates in the fray this time from the Baramulla seat.
