New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday reiterated that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is an integral part of India and affirmed India's commitment to reclaim it. Speaking at a rally in West Bengal's Serampore, Shah highlighted the contrast between the peaceful situation in Kashmir post the abrogation of Article 370 and the ongoing protests in PoK.
"After the abrogation of Article 370 by the government in 2019, peace has returned to Kashmir. But now we witness protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Earlier slogans of Azaadi were heard here, now the same slogans are heard in PoK. Earlier stones were pelted here, now stones are pelted in PoK," Shah stated.
The Home Minister's remarks follow the protests in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) over inflation which took a violent turn on Monday after Pakistan Rangers officers opened fire at protestors, resulting in the death of four people.
The protests had turned violent Friday after police used force on a group of protestors in Mirpur. The Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) had called for a region-wide protest on May 11, Saturday.
Directing criticism towards Congress leaders for their reluctance to support the demand for reclaiming PoK, Amit Shah said, "Congress leaders like Mani Shankar Aiyar say it should not be done as they have an atom bomb. But let me say this Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is part of India and we will take it."
Shah framed the current Lok Sabha elections as a choice between the "corrupt leaders of the I.N.D.I. alliance" and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he described as an honest politician. He urged voters in Bengal to decide between supporting infiltrators or the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) for refugees, and between voting for jihad or development.
Shah also criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for opposing the CAA and organizing rallies in support of infiltrators to appease her vote bank.

Why People Are Protesting In PoK?

The Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) has been demanding tax-free electricity and subsidies on wheat flour. The protests, which have been sporadically going on for over a year, intensified over the last few weeks forcing the government to enter into a dialogue with the protestors. After the latest round of discussion between the two parties ended in a deadlock, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was forced to declare a Rs 23 billion aid package for the region on Monday.
According to reports, the complete strike, which began on Friday, has brought life to a complete halt in almost every part of PoK. PM Sharif, while announcing the aid package, described the situation in the region as 'deeply concerning.'
