New Delhi: A photo from Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Lahore visit is going viral after Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on starting his third term at the Centre. A day after the oath-taking ceremony, both the Pakistani leaders shared congratulatory posts on social media.
Former Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif's post for PM Modi was loaded with praise for his government and had a mention of hate and hope. His post came just hours after Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif sent 'felicitations' to PM Modi.
Shehbaz Sharif’s elder brother Nawaz Sharif, a three-time former premier and head of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), spoke of replacing hate with hope.
“My warm felicitations to Modi Ji (@narendramodi) on assuming office for the third time. Your party’s success in recent elections reflects the confidence of the people in your leadership. Let us replace hate with hope and seize the opportunity to shape the destiny of the two billion people of South Asia,” said Nawaz Sharif.
Notably, Nawaz Sharif had attended PM Modi’s first oath-taking ceremony in 2014. He was accompanied by his wife Kulsoom Nawaz and his son Hussain Nawaz as he arrived at the technical Air Force base in Palam.
Earlier today, Shehbaz Sharif shared a post on social media platform X, a day after Narendra Modi took oath as the PM of India for a record third term.
"Felicitations to @narendramodi on taking oath as the Prime Minister of India," Shehbaz wrote on X.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Lahore Trip

Hours later, a photo of former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee from his trip to Lahore surfaced on social media and went viral. Vajpayee had travelled to Lahore in a bus and a few months later that Kargil War happened.

On 19 February, 1999, Atal Bihari Vajpayee arrived in Lahore in a bus accompanied by prominent writers, journalists, scientists, cricketer, artists and actors among others. Dev Anand, Kapil Dev, Mallika Sarabhai, Javed Akhtar and Shatrughan Sinha were some of the late Indian PM’s co-passengers on the bus.
The ‘bus yatra’ was part of a confidence-building measure that both Vajpayee and his then Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif had taken at the SAARC Summit in Colombo in 1998. It was in the aftermath of the nuclear tests that were carried out earlier that year by both neighbours that had sent shockwaves around the world.

Pressure was mounting on both the leaders from the international community, especially the US which threatened sanctions on both.
Vajpayee even visited Minar-e-Pakistan, a symbolic icon of Pakistan’s creation, as part of this ‘bus diplomacy’ despite stiff resistance from the Pakistani security.
As former Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief AS Dulat mentioned in his book, Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years, Vajpayee not just visited the monument, he even wrote in the visitor’s book there: “A stable, secure and prosperous Pakistan is in India’s interest. Let no one in Pakistan be in doubt. India sincerely wishes Pakistan well.”
According to Dulat, Vajpayee had planned to only cross the border by bus, meet and greet Sharif and come back. But Sharif had convinced him to stay back and visit Lahore saying, “Dar tak aye ho, ghar nahin aaoge? (You have come to the door, won’t you come inside?)”

Months later, both sides engaged in the clashes high up in the mountains that led to the killing of Indian and Pakistani soldiers. Even though India won the Kargil War in July, it was jolted by yet another terror attack in December — the hijack of Delhi-Kathmandu Indian Airlines flight IC-814.
When Vajpayee passed away in August 2018, Pakistan remembered him with these lines from his poem — Hum Jung Na Hone Denge.
