Akbaruddin Owaisi is set to take the oath on Saturday morning, following which he will be responsible for administering the oath to the newly elected MLAs the same day.
Hyderabad: Akbaruddin Owaisi of AIMIM has been appointed as the pro-tem speaker of the Telangana assembly by Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. This decision has sparked tension, especially among BJP leaders, who have declared their refusal to take the oath administered by Owaisi. BJP leader Raja Singh has alleged that CM A Revanth Reddy was scared of AIMIM like his predecessor and hence appointed Akbaruddin the pro-tem Speaker, a TOI report said.
Owaisi is set to take the oath on Saturday morning, following which he will be responsible for administering the oath to the newly elected MLAs the same day. Goshamahal BJP MLA-elect T Raja Singh has firmly stated that he, along with other BJP MLAs, will not participate in the oath ceremony, pointing to AIMIM's controversial past.
The BJP leader emphasised that he would only take the oath when a full-time speaker is appointed. Notably, in 2018, Raja Singh had previously refused the oath administered by an AIMIM pro-tem speaker.
As per protocol, the senior-most MLA is designated as the pro-tem speaker. Akbaruddin's appointment comes as he secures his sixth term in the assembly, representing the Chandrayangutta constituency.
Congress minister D Sridhar Babu highlighted that other veteran MLAs from various parties have also served six terms, but the political decision favoured Owaisi for the pro-tem speaker role.
"N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Tummala Nageswara from Congress, and Danam Nagender and Talasani Srinivas Yadav from the BRS are all six-term MLAs.Pocharam Srinivas Reddy has served as Speaker. Despite that there was a political decision to go with Akbaruddin as the pro-tem Speaker," Congress minister D Sridhar Babu told TOI.
