IMD Warns of Heatwave in Central and Western India

As summer approaches, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of above-normal temperatures in central and western India, with a looming heatwave expected to hit Gujarat, Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh. Stressing the need for proactive measures, the IMD urges authorities to prepare for the upcoming elections, considering the large electorate. The IMD advises providing access to cooling centres and issuing heat advisories to mitigate the impact, especially on vulnerable populations like the elderly and those with health issues. Heatwave preparedness plans are in place in 23 states. The health impacts of heatwaves include dehydration, heat cramps, and heat stroke, emphasising preventive measures such as avoiding the sun, staying hydrated, and wearing loose clothing.
