A horrific case of food contamination aboard an Indian Railways train has come to light after a passenger shared a picture of an insect found in their meal. Parvez Hashmi, of Nalasopara, was travelling aboard the Kashi Express when he had the misfortune of spotting one in his order of Dal Chawal.
The X user tagged Union Minister for Railways, Aswhini Vaishnav, in his tweet, stating: “Train no.15018 kashi express found insect on food.”
Commenting on the post, one predicted the official response: “‘DM with PNR number & inconvenience’ standard message coming soon by Railways.”
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), indeed replied in a near-similar manager.
“ Sir, kindly share PNR and mobile number preferably in Direct Message (DM),” read the text.
Although the incident is only the latest in a seemingly-endless string of complaints received by the Railway authorities, it appears to have laid bare a previously-unknown pattern.
"All Gorakhpur trains foods are like this only,” a commented read. “They charge high price compared to the standard price, and they charge extra rupees five for water also, take strict action against the vendor.”
Another user said in disbelief: “Even after paying premium prices, this is the service we get.”
“Don't complain. It's free protein under the Prime minister Protein Yojana started by visionary rail minister @AshwiniVaishnaw,” one wrote sarcastically.
Other tongue-in-cheek reactions accused Hashmi of “defaming” Indian Railways.
“You should have clearly mentioned when you asked for food that you didn't want insects,” read one.
While it remains to be seen how the issue will be settled, the IRCTC on several occasions has had to pay hefty compensations over food containing insects.
In 2017, a consumer grievance redressal forum ordered the agency to pay Rs. 30,000 to a passenger following a similar incident that occurred onboard the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express.
Earlier this year, IRCTC ended up paying an identical sum to a passenger who experienced “emotional and physical distress” due to a dirty toilet while travelling from Delhi to Indore.
