Early pregnancy can significantly impact family dynamics, often presenting unexpected challenges and opportunities for growth. For young parents, navigating the transition into parenthood can be daunting, as they balance the demands of raising a child with their own personal development and aspirations. Shirli Ling, Singapore's influencer, has stirred up a storm of debate on early pregnancy, following the revelation that she became a grandmother at the age of 34. Ling, now 35, found herself in this unexpected role when her 17-year-old son welcomed a child last year, thrusting her into the spotlight for her unconventional family dynamics.
Managing a thriving chicken hotpot restaurant and commanding a significant online presence, Ling has led a life far from conventional, marked by three marriages and the nurturing of five children. While she faces criticism from some online quarters, branding her a "failed mother" due to her unconventional family structure, others commend her unwavering support for her children.
Ling's early grand-motherhood has ignited a fierce debate on social media, with netizens divided over the implications of her unconventional family situation.
In an Instagram video, Ling candidly shared her journey of becoming a grandmother at a youthful age, describing it as a mixture of "good and bad" experiences. Reflecting on her eldest son's girlfriend's pregnancy last year, she humorously remarked that her son seemed to have taken a page from her book, becoming a parent at 17.
She said, ''Compared to other kids, he is more curious, he likes to play. So when he told me his girlfriend got pregnant, I felt that I wanted him to decide for himself and take responsibility for his actions.''
"Depends on how you look at it and how you manage it," she stated further.

In a separate video, Ling expressed her reluctance to "encourage" her children to have children at a young age, citing her own challenges as a young mother. However, she emphasised her intention to provide guidance and support to her son instead of resorting to criticism.
''But since it has already happened, I can only teach them how to face it, how to make decisions, how to be responsible for your behaviour. I also can't guarantee that if you 'take away' the first baby, you won't have a second baby. If they don't how to think, they'll still make the same mistake. When they need help, parents have to be there to keep educating them, encouraging them, and teaching them. Always be there for your kids, no matter what happens,'' she added.
Her posts ignited a heated debate, with some branding her a "failed mother" while others lauded her unwavering support for her children. There were even jests suggesting she might become a "great-grandmother at 53 and a great-great-grandmother at 72."
Praising her, a user said, ''You are open about this. Most people would start blaming their children for being young parents.'' Another commented, ''I think you are a failed mother. Is it really good for a child to start a family at an immature age?”
A user remarked, "Not all moms are good mom but you definitely are a great mom."
