Rahul Gandhi's Haircut Chair Draws Customers to Raebareli Salon

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was in Raebareli, one of the two seats he’s representing at the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections aside from Wayanad, Kerala, for fourth phase campaigning when he visited a barber shop Monday. The chair in which he got a haircut is now drawing customers to the salon.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Rahul Gandhi, Congress’ Raebareli candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, visited a salon in the district on Monday.
  • The MP, 53, got a haircut and had his beard trimmed at New Mumbadevi Hair Cutting Salon, run by Mithun Kumar.
  • Customers are now visiting the barber shop to avail the services in the very chair on which Gandhi sat.
Raebareli has been the Indian National Congress (INC’s) last bastion in Uttar Pradesh since the grand old party lost the Amethi seat, one of its two electoral fortresses in the state. Now, a salon chair has become the constituency’s “hot seat” ever since Rahul Gandhi got a haircut in it.
The 53-year-old Congress leader was in Raebareli, one of the two seats he’s representing at the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections aside from Wayanad, Kerala, for fourth phase campaigning when he paid a visit to a barber shop on Monday.
Gandhi got his hair cut and beard trimmed at the New Mumbadevi Hair Cutting Salon in the district’s Lalganj town. A video of his interaction with the shop’s owner, Mithun Kumar, went viral shortly after.
The salon has become an unexpected local attraction since the Congress MP dropped by, with his haircut chair being the main draw for customers.
“Each customer coming in is demanding that he be seated in the same chair [as Rahul Gandhi], not any other,” one of the patrons said.
“Since Rahul Ji sat on this chair, customers also feel like getting a haircut in it on the off chance it brings good fortune and fame to them.”
During his visit, the former Congress president chatted with Kumar, learning about his life experiences.
When asked about his daily earnings, the barber said he makes Rs 400-500 on average, adding that he works from 7 am to 8:30 pm.
Gandhi also heard that Kumar was shown the ropes by his older brother in Sareni, his native village in Raebareli, before temporarily moving to Mumbai, where he worked at another salon for a while.
However, the hairdresser returned to his hometown, where he said he likes it better.
The pair then jokingly discussed the “fire haircut” trend before Gandhi explained the benefits of Congress' Mahalaxmi Scheme, under which women from low-income families will be entitled to an yearly payment of Rs 1 lakh in their bank accounts.
Raebareli is due for polling on Monday, May 20, as part the fifth phase of the 18th Lok Sabha election. Voting will conclude on June 1, with the results set to be announced three days later.
