Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in men's javelin throw event at Federation Cup 2024 with his best throw of 82.27m in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on Wednesday.
Reigning Olympic champion Chopra clinched the gold with his fourth attempt which was his best and last one of the day. He did not take his last two attempts.
On the other hand, DP Manu bagged silver with his best effort of 82.06m while Uttam Balasaheb won the bronze with a 78.39m effort at the Kalinga Stadium.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Chopra as this was his first competitive outing in India since his historic Olympic gold in Tokyo three years ago. The last time Neeraj competed in India was at the Federation Cup in March 2021, where he won the gold medal with a throw of 87.80m.
The star athlete was also competing in his second competitive outing of the 2024 outdoor athletics season, having finished second at the Doha Diamond League last week with a throw of 88.36m.
Meanwhile, Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena had a disappointing outing at his home venue. Jena, who has secured a Paris 2024 Olympic quota for India in men’s javelin throw alongside Chopra, finished fifth with a 75.49m throw.
Bibin Antony took the fourth position with a personal best effort of 77.37m.
Notably, Manu DP led the 12-man field in the men’s javelin throw final with the 82.06m clearance for the first three rounds but Neeraj took the pole position with his fourth effort.
"I competed at Doha a few days back and haven’t recovered properly yet. So, I decided to skip the last two throws. I will be competing again in Czechia in another 10-12 days so I took it easy," Neeraj Chopra said.
"It was nice to compete in India after so long. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support us today," he added.
